PROPHESY The Suffering Servant
Isaiah 52:13-52:12 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. v14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: v15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider. 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? v2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. v3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. v4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. v5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. v6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. v7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. v8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. v9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. v10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. v11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. v12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

v7-8 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. v8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Acts 8:32-35 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: v33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. v34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? v35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

PROPHESY The Messiah would bring in a new covenant
Jeremiah 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: v32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: v33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. v34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Hebrews 8:6-13 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. v7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. v8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: v9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. v10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: v11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. v12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. v13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

PROPHESY The Messiah would be the Son of Man
Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. v14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

PROPHESY The Messiah would come according to God’s timetable
Daniel 9:25-27; Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. v26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. v27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem: 445 BC Nehemiah 2:1, 5-6 (The only decree concerning the city of Jerusalem) And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, … v5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it. v6 And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
9:25 unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
As in 9:2 Daniel learned from the “books” that “God would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.” (9:2) so his thoughts would have been about the seventy years of captivity coming to an end. He then receives a communication totalling seventy times seven and so it is logical deduction that the subject is still in years and so 70 weeks means 70 x 7 which equals 490 years. The seventy weeks are here divided into three periods. (1) Seven weeks, or 49 years, for the restoration of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:1-32) in troublesome times*. (2) Sixty-two weeks, or 434 years, from that time to Messiah the Prince going into Jerusalem on a donkey**. (3) One week, or seven years, after the rapture of the church to heaven (1Thessalonians 4:13-17) for the Tribulation period (Daniel 9:27).
*Nehemiah 4:7-8 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, v8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. (See also Nehemiah 6:1-19, 13:4-9)
** Matthew 21:1-11; v4-6 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, v5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. v6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them. (See also Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-16)
9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:
Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.
It is after the three score and two weeks that Messiah, i.e. the Lord Jesus Christ, is cut off at the cross.
Mark 10:33-34 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: v34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. (See also Matthew 20:17-18, Luke 18:31-33)
1Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; v4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
9:26 and the people, of the prince that shall come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood,
The Prince that shall come, i.e. in the future, but his people would destroy the city about that time. The Romans under Titus destroyed Jerusalem and its great white marble temple with some gold embellishments, in A.D. 70. The flood of the Roman armies levelled the city with not one stone being left upon another. This fulfilled Jesus Christ’s prophesy in Matthew 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things (the temple buildings v1) verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
As the Roman army destroyed Jerusalem, so the coming prince will emerge from a western nation.
9:26 and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
From that time on the history of the city would be one of war and devastation. The end here will be when “the times of the Gentiles” finish which is when the Millennium starts.
Luke 21:24 “and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.”
The many sieges of Jerusalem and wars concerning Israel through history bear this out. The city was taken by the Romans during the Bar Kochba revolt in AD 135 (killing half a million Jews), Muslims in AD 638, Crusaders in AD 1099, Saladin in AD 1187, Tartars in AD 1244, Egyptians in AD 1247, Ottomans in AD 1517, the British in AD 1917, Jordan in AD 1948 and the modern state of Israel in AD 1967. Today, Palestine remains a war-zone.
9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:
We now start the seventieth week. There is a time gap between the sixty ninth and seventieth weeks. This is partly seen because the Messiah is cut off and the people, of the prince that shall come, shall destroy the city of Jerusalem (in AD 70) after the sixty ninth week is finished. There are other places in the Bible where time gaps are needed to explain the text. For example:
Isaiah 61:2 In Luke 4:16-22 the Lord Jesus reads Isaiah 61:1-2 “’The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; … to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.’ And he closed the book, …” It immediately seems that the Lord Jesus finished the reading in a most indiscriminate way because v2 continues with, “and the day of vengeance of our God …”. However it was not an indiscriminate decision because “the day of vengeance of our God” had not yet come, and will not come until Revelation 6. Evidently at the Lord Jesus time on earth there was a gap of possibly 2,000 years or more between the two parts of this one verse.
Zechariah 9:9-10 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion ; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem : behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass and upon a colt the foal of an ass. … and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea”. v9 is the Lord Jesus’ life on earth and v10 is the Millennium yet to happen. So while there is no obvious gap between these verses we know that there is about 2,000 years between the two events. This quotation is recorded in Matthew 21:4-5 and John 12:14-15.
So the gap between the sixty ninth and seventieth weeks which is the period of the Church Age, which extends from Pentecost (Acts c2) to the Rapture (1Thessalonians 4:13-18). It is never mentioned specifically in the Old Testament and was a secret revealed by God through the New Testament apostles and prophets.
The Roman prince, also called the “man of sin” (2Thessalonians 2:3) and the “beast” “of the sea” (Revelation 13:1-2) the beast, shall confirm the covenant with “many” (the unbelieving majority of the nation of Israel) “for one week” (the seven year Tribulation Period).
9:27 and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice (blood offerings) and the oblation (non blood offerings) to cease,
Half way through the week, i.e. after 3½ years, the Roman Prince will turn against the Jews and cause the sacrifices to cease.
2Thessalonians 2:4 Who (v3 the man of sin) opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Revelation 13:5-6 And there was given unto him (the beast v4) a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months (i.e. 3½ years). v6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
9:27 and for the overspreading of abominations
An ‘abomination’ in Scripture is an idol (an example 1Kings 11:5-7).
Matthew 24:15-16 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) v16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains (See also Mark 13:14-15; Luke 21:20, 24).
Revelation 13:11-12, 14-15 And I beheld another beast (also called the false prophet in Revelation 16:13) coming up out of the earth; …v12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. v14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. v15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. (As the second beast will make the image of the first beast to speak it would be safe to assume that the second beast will put that image in the holy place of the temple.)
9:27 he shall make it desolate,
Revelation 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
9:27 even until the consummation, There will be a completion of the terrible persecution of the Jews i.e. until the end of the last half of the seventieth week, a period known as the Great Tribulation.
Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
9:27 and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate (i.e. desolator Newberry margin, RV, RSV etc). Then the Roman prince, who makes desolate, will himself be destroyed, as decreed by God.
Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

John 7:40-43 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. v41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? v42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? v43 So there was a division among the people because of him.

Matthew 27:3-10 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, v4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. v5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. v6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. v7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. v 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. v9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; v10 And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
(We can be certain, of course, that Matthew had not made a mistake in his quotation and that this was not a copyist’s error. According to Wm. Hoste (Bible Problems and Answers), “The probable explanation is the one cited by Lightfoot, that Jeremiah, as considerably the longest of the prophets, had the first place among them, and so his name came to be used for the volume of the prophetic writings. He quotes the learned David Kimchi as his authority”.)
PROPHESY The Messiah would be pierced
Zechariah 12:9-12a And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. v10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. v11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. v12 And the land shall mourn, ….

John 19:31-37 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. v32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. v33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: v34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. v35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. v36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. v37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

Malachi 4:5-6 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: v6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
