The Lord Jesus, Who is God’s eternal Son, made a number of statements about the Bible.
John 10:35 “… and the scripture cannot be broken.” Therefore the Lord Jesus was absolutely sure of the Divine authority of the Bible.
Matthew 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot (the smallest Hebrew letter) or one tittle (a part of certain Hebrew letters) shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” The Lord Jesus said that until heaven and earth are finished not a single item of the law will pass away or not be fulfilled.
Mark 13:31 “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.” The Lord Jesus assures them that His words and prophecies are the stable and more permanent than the heaven and earth around them. So He was giving a very strong claim to His speaking by Divine authority.
John 8:26 “… he (God the Father v18) that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.” As God is true therefore His Words are worthy to be believed and what He says about men are the truth. You will find it a terrible thing to speak against His authority. Also all those instructions that Jesus Christ had given to the world pleased God the Father and He approved of it all.
Anyone asking if the Bible is true must indicate that they have some understanding of truth. So what is truth? This question is often spoken of as a deep philosophical problem which can only be worked out by the brainy and university professors. However answer is not complicated. Truth is what matches with or relates to reality. Consequently, what is real is true and what is unreal is false.
Therefore the question is “Who is true?”
Is the devil true?
1John 3:8 “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning.” The meaning is whatever person continually commits sin is reflecting what the devil does and so is off the devil. The Bible never talks about people being born of the devil because ‘to be born’ implies life, and all that comes from the devil is spiritual death. In this verse the “beginning” would speak of whenever the devil started sinning. John 3:7 Jesus said “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him”. The devil had the greatest privilege of being near God when he was created in eternity past and yet sank to the worst of crimes of bringing Adam into death at the beginning of the world. He also was behind Jesus Christ, the Son of God Who became a Man, being murdered.
“and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him”. The devil once stood in the glorious state of truth, but he did not remain in it but fell from it and now has no truth in him.
“When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it”. When he tells a lie he is speaking out of his own resources or attitude. Lies form part of his very existence and being the father of them means that he started lies.
So the devil is not true.
Are people true?
Romans 3:22b-23 “For there is no difference, for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
So people are not true. Therefore I cannot depend on my experiences, good or bad, nor my emotions to get the truth.
Is God true?
Leviticus 11:45 “For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.”
1Peter 1:16 “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
So as God has no sin in Him therefore He is true. This is emphasized in the following verses:
John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
1Thessalonians 1:9 “… how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.”
John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Therefore as “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” (2Timothy 3:16) and as “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation (when it was written). v21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved (meaning ‘borne along’) by the Holy Ghost.” (2Peter 1:20-21) you can believe that the Bible is true.
There were many prophecies about the Lord Jesus which He fulfilled hundreds of years later and so again proved the Bible to be true. Some of the prophecies are below.
PROPHESY The Messiah would be the descendant of Abraham through whom all nations would be blessed
Genesis 12:3 “And I (the Lord v1) will bless them that bless thee (Abraham v1), and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”. All nations would be blessed through Christ Who would be a descendant of Abraham.
FULFILLED
Matthew 1:1 “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
By being a “son of David/Abraham” it means that David and Abraham were among the Lord Jesus Christ’s ancestors.
PROPHESY The Messiah would be born of a virgin
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
FULFILLED
Matthew 1:22-23 “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, v23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
PROPHESY The Messiah would come riding to Jerusalem on a donkey
Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
FULFILLED
Matthew 21:4-10 “All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, v5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. v6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, v7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. v8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. v9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” (See also Mark 11:1-11a; Luke 19:29-41, John 12:12-16)
PROPHESY The Messiah’s Sufferings
Isaiah 53:7-8 “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. v8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.”
FULFILLED
Acts 8:32-35 “The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: v33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. v34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? v35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.”
1Peter 2:23 “Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.”
PROPHESY The Messiah would be Resurrected
Psalm 16:7-11 “I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. v8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. v9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. v10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. v11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
FULFILLED
Acts 13:35-37 “Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. v36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: v37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.”
PROPHESY The Messiah is spoken of through all the Old Testament Scriptures
Luke 24:25 “Then he (Jesus v15) said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken”.
FULFILLED
Luke 24:26-27, 32 “Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? v27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. … v32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”
It is noticeable that the PROPHESY The Messiah’s Sufferings says:
Isaiah 53:8 “… for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.”
This was amazingly FULFILLED when “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; v4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” The Lord Jesus Christ took the judgment of God against our sins when on the cross He was stricken by God for our sins and transgressions. A main point for that was so that sinners can be saved from the everlasting judgment of God for their sins. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish (that is should not go to hell) but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Have you believed in Him yet for the everlasting salvation of your soul?
