- A form of words that offers praise to God, especially for Himself and His work of creation, redemption or judgments. Scripture records a number of these forms of praise which were used in both public and private worship.
- The dictionary defines doxology as “an expression of praise to God, especially a short hymn sung as part of a Christian worship service.” The word doxology comes from the Greek doxa, (“glory, splendour, grandeur”) and logos, (“word” or “speaking”). So it is praise to God about Who He is. Some verses are not quite a doxology because we are to give thanks for blessings spiritual and natural rather than blessing God Himself e.g. Ephesians 5:19-20 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; v20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
The Doxologies are first put in chronological order and then into categories.
